FINE ARTS

Picture Study

Forms I through IV

Students will participate in picture study throughout their time at Emmaus. This is an in class activity and will culminate in the study of 9 - 12 pictures a year. The process is simple; the reward of close attention and oral narration is "a reverent knowledge of what has been produced." Charlotte Mason

Forms V and VI

Picture study will continue into the high school years, and when added to the music appreciation line, will earn 2 credits for their Fine Arts elective over the 4 years. (.5 credits a year.) This study will more closely align to the time period and delve more deeply into the artist and the period in which they are creating art. However, the basic aspects of picture study will stay the same. Writing activities such as written narration and essay writing will be integrated as well.

Music Appreciation

All Forms

Within the Emmaus atmosphere, music will be played during times of reflection or quiet work. This music may be aligned with the time period that is being studied or the energy level desired in the classroom! Musical choices will be varied but excellent.

Forms I through IV

Music appreciation will be fostered through the study of individual composers and their major works each year. 4 - 8 composers will be studied a year; optimally, the same composers will be studied so that the parent can saturate the home with these selections as well, to every student's benefit. This study will have many similarities to picture study in that the students will be introduced to the composer and time period, but the emphasis will be on the art form itself.

Forms V and VI

Music appreciation will continue into high school in a very similar fashion, but with more depth. Students will also learn more about the form and structure of classical music as well. This study will align with the time period that they are studying. Combined with Picture Study, the students will earn 2 Fine Arts credits by graduation (.5 credits per year).
